Vatican's 'Secret Archives' unveiled
The name alone is enough to excite curiosity. For centuries, the Vatican Secret Archives have been regarded as perhaps the most enigmatic and inaccessible collection of documents in the world. They contain more than 50 miles of shelves of correspondence between successive popes and some of history’s biggest names, from Henry VIII to Hitler, Michelangelo to Mozart. Now, though, the Vatican has allowed a sliver of light to shine into this most remarkable repository. The Holy See has permitted, for the first time, a commercial publishing company to produce a lavish, hard-bound book that features reproductions of more than 100 of the archives’ most fascinating documents. “We were amazed by the access we were given and the speed with which the whole project was completed,” says Paul Van den Heuvel, the head of the Belgian publishing house undertaking the task. “The Vatican is beginning to realize what an incredible asset it has.” The tentative opening up to the outside world is also an attempt to dispel some of the myths and mystique that have always enveloped the archives. The 30 archivists who work in the Secret Archives, in an inner sanctum of the Vatican City State, are eager to dispel the notion that they guard the Roman Catholic Church’s darkest secrets. “They are the private archives of the popes. We really don’t have many secrets,” says Marco Grilli, the secretary to the prefecture of the archives.

I'd offer the idea that this isn't the "Really Secret Archive."

Seconded.
WHY would they feign to reveal anything pertinent to the general populous? IMHO religion is used as a means of control ...n'est pas? After close to 2 thousand years (more aligning to the council of Nicea 325 and onwards), these puppies aren't going to give up their secrets that fast) No damn way. What is revealed to the public isn't necessarily the same info that is 'cherished' behind closed doors of the papal palace.

No secret someone else could tell you or show you is that significant. Masonry, for example... the secret handshakes and meetings and initiations and symbols... all of these things would make no sense to keep a secret, because the objects themselves contain nothing secret. If a secret decieves you with its answer, it's not a secret worth knowing at that level.
The greatest secrets protect themselves by the very nature of what is revealed. A magic eye painting is useless, frustrating, and stressful for someone who can't see it. Therefore, most would pass it by and go WTF, forgetting it almost ninstantaneously. Those who look further into it might come across a picture of two people having sex, and many of those who can see it....they would get offended and walk away. Those who remain are those who have seen past the veil of abhorrence, and they appreciate the beauty of the picture being presented. That is all you will find in the Vatican Archives, I would assume. Pricey sounding midievil documents, most of which would be barely comprehendable to the layperson's mind, some of which would offend even the most studious religious scholar or offiical, and of which only few within the Roman Catholic paradigm would see the value in. Religious Truth guards itself, but for the Outer Representation of a Faith which proclaims a specific man to be THE incarnation of God on Earth, the same truth which saves the few would destroy the validity of Roman Catholicism itself... especially if the True bones of the religion resembles anything of "esoteric" or "occult" leaning... Although willfull ignorance is also a key factor in Christianity's continued success. Opening up the secret vaults completely might reveal absolutely nothing of base intellectual value. So who cares?

And, it's not a secret if you're in on it. So, he's not lying.

I'm currently reading Philip Roth, "The Dying Animal." The man knows how to write about lust, desire and sensuality. He also has a good sense of humor.
