The Earth *Really* Moved: Chilean Quake Shifted a City 10 Feet to the West

I thought this was a pretty cool story.

The magnitude 8.8 earthquake that rocked Chile on February 27th didn’t just move the Earth’s axis, thereby shortening the day by 1.26 microseconds, but it also caused entire cities to shift their geographical location.

Studying precise GPS images of the area struck by the quake, a team led by earth scientist Mike Bevis discovered that the Chilean city of Concepción had moved 10 feet to the west. The epicenter of the quake was 71 miles northeast of Concepción, which is Chile’s second largest city.

The effect was widespread: The capital city, Santiago, was wrenched 11 inches west-southwest, while Beunos Aires, located nearly 800 miles from the epicenter, jumped an inch to the west. The earthquake was the fifth largest ever to be recorded by seismographs and even caused far-off areas like Fortaleza, Brazil and the Falkland Islands to change location slightly. The changes were detected by teams from The Ohio State University, the University of Hawaii, the University of Memphis and the California Institute of Technology, as well as agencies across South America [CNN].

The area where the quake hit is of particular interest to geoscientists because it is an active subduction zone, where an oceanic plate is colliding with a continental plate and being pushed into the Earth’s molten mantle below [Wired]. The world’s five largest quakes since 1900, including the largest quake ever recorded (a Chilean quake measuring 9.5), have all occurred in subduction zones. Earth scientist Ben Brooks of the University of Hawaii declared that this “earthquake will arguably become one of the, if not the most important, great earthquakes yet studied….We now have modern, precise instruments to evaluate this event” [CNN].

In fact, the Earth’s Core is like a planet within a planet. (mama earth is pregnant). Geologist disagree with me, but I think Geologist should reexamine their data. The day of Earth Quake Prediction is very near to us. The Earth’s Core is very heavy, made of radiactive heavy elements. In fact, it is so much like a planet within a planet, I named it after myself…Planet Martin Nix!

That's an interesting perspective, conclusion and prediction.

Now that's the big news here. Geologists generally assume the core to consist of molten iron and (as I recall) nickel. The lava proposal is new. Wonder where he gets it?

That's kind of unfair guys. Sure, the satellites haven't moved.....the coordinates will all remain the same.....but if an important marker used to be at X coordinates.....it no longer is.

The ground position coordinates from GPS will have moved.
The benchmark points on the ground will have moved in the same in relation to the surrounding ground. Surveying from those would be OK.

That's what first occurred to me. There are units that are very accurate, just not consumer grade.

Have you seen modern surveying equipment? The mushroom top thingy on their equipment is GPS stuff. A lot of surveying is done via GPS.

The accuracy is determined by the number of satellites the device uses to "triangulate" its position. Most off the shelf equipment uses 3, maybe 4 satellites. The industrial and construction equipment uses a great deal more.....with an equivalent increase in accuracy.

I have a WAS GPS that will track many satellites but the stated accuracy is only 10 to 15 feet.

Some Differential GPS equipment claims an accuracy level to 5cm. That's roughly the length of a man's.....pinky finger.

Maybe, now they are in Chile. This whole thing was a conspiracy carried out by Onstar and the Chilean government to get their GPS coordinates correct in Chile. I thought everybody knew that.
